A complete blend of cultures, styles and a location to arrive at very hungry.

As I mentioned in a previous post, a staple for me on any trip to London is (at least) one night accommodation in Camden Town and an afternoon exploring the Camden Market, so after spending my first 2 nights in Weybridge, I made my way to Camden Town to spend my last night in the penthouse of the Holiday Inn, Camden Lock. I checked in, literally dropped my bags, quickly looked at the incredible view from my balcony, then head straight out the door for the markets.

The Camden Market can be an extremely busy place. I really love the atmosphere. A complete blend of cultures, styles and a location to arrive at very hungry. My favourite go-to market stall is Radiobot, which is located in the market stall shed behind Gilgamesh, and while walking through the Stables Market look out for the Egyptian street food stall, La Falafel, set inside what I'm sure is one of the smallest stores in the world. The food is delicious plus the falafels are made and cooked fresh to order.
Established in 1974 the Camden Lock Market was the first of 5 markets to open and become what is collectively known as the Camden Market, the UK's largest street market and one of London's top tourist destinations, which attracts more than 100,000 people every weekend. The individual markets that combine to create the Camden Market are:

The individual markets that combine to create the Camden Market are:
- Camden Lock Market.
- Stables Market.
- Inverness Street Market.
- Camden (Buck Street) Market.
- Camden Lock Village/ Canal Market (my favourite market of them all - now closed/ demolished).

in the Stables Market.
Ranging from standard bric-a-brac to vintage and designer pieces, the Camden Market is home to a colossal range of wares, plays host to a large number of international food stalls and houses acclaimed permanent fixtures such as Gilgamesh, Lock 17, Proud Camden, The Cuban & Cyberdog.

I'm not going to lie, this is probably the highest priced market I have ever been too (in the world), but, it's the Camden Market! Some artists creating the wares are ridiculously talented, therefore, you will find some amazing handmade products here that you cannot buy anywhere else in the world, so you can always justify the extra pennies. In saying this, you will definitely still find bargains around every corner.

One of my top 2 places in London (I just cannot choose between Camden Town and Shoreditch) it is impossible for me to leave the market without spending money, even if I only pop past for a couple of minutes. There is always a shirt, dress or accessory I didn't know I needed.
THE REDEVELOPMENT OF CAMDEN LOCK VILLAGE
What once was my favourite section of the Camden Market, the Camden Lock Village, has now been completely demolished in preparation for redevelopment. I had heard the plans months before arriving, however, it had slipped my mind so it came as a bit of a shock once arriving to find the Lock Village gone.
Bye bye motorbike chairs, bye bye hut style stalls, bye bye the loud dancehall music you hear as you would walk through, bye bye sitting by the canal after buying a hamburger from one of the food vendors, bye bye!

I hope the final product reflects the extraordinary vibe that the market once there embodied, although, after learning that the developer responsible for building the Shard (that pointy London skyscraper) is spearheading the project and adding 170 brand new yuppie apartment buildings/ homes in the area, unfortunately, I think it's sadly safe to say that we can all say goodbye forever to the vibe this fantastic section of the market created. |
